I find articles like this fascinating because I grew up in rural South Dakota. One of my friends recently said he’d never seen a Black person until college. I thought about that, and knew I’d seen Black people because my family had traveled somewhat. However, when I thought: when did I first talk to a Black person, the answer was shocking… as far as I know, maybe after I finished my PhD. I think it can be hard for people who didn’t come from areas like this to understand how different the perspective on racism can be.
